A nice, enjoyable book filled with lesser known anecdotes about the world's most famous rock band.

The book includes very little new information, but for what it's worth, it is a fascinating read. The author did a lot of research, and told us a good story.

রুশ লেখক ইভান সের্হেইয়েভিচ তুর্গেনেভের জন্ম ১৮১৮ সালের ২৮ অক্টোবর। বেঁচে ছিলেন ৩ সেপ্টেম্বর, ১৮৮৩ সাল পর্যন্ত। ৬৫ বছরের জীবনে তিনি উপন্যাস, ছোট গল্প, কবি, চিত্রনাট্য লিখেছেন। অনুবাদক হিসেবেও সুপরিচিত ছিলেন তিনি। রুশ সাহিত্যকে পশ্চিমা বিশ্বের কাছে জনপ্রিয় করার বিষয়ে তার বড় অবদান রয়েছে।

তুর্গেনেভ ১৮৬২ সালে ফাদার্স অ্যান্ড সানস বইটি লেখেন। এই বইটিকে ১৯ শতকের ফিকশন গল্পের তালিকায় বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি রচনা হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয়।

সম্প্রতি প্রায় ১৬০ বছরের পুরনো এই উপন্যাসটি পড়ে শেষ করলাম।
বইটির কাহিনী মূলত ৪ জন বৈচিত্র্যময় পুরুষ চরিত্রকে ঘিরে আবর্তিত হয়েছে। আরকেদি কিরসানভ, তার বন্ধু বাজারভ, আরকেদি’র বাবা নিকোলাই এবং চাচা পাভেল।

নিঃসন্দেহে বাজারভ বইয়ের সবচেয়ে জটিল এবং আকর্ষণীয় চরিত্র। প্রখ্যাত ভারতীয় ঔপন্যাসিক শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায় সম্ভবত তার দূরবীন গল্পের ধ্রুব চরিত্রের জন্য বাজারভের কাছ থেকে কিছু বিশেষত্ব ধার করেছিলেন। অবশ্যই দুটি চরিত্র পুরোপুরি ভিন্ন—তবে কিছুটা প্রভাব রয়েছে বলেই বোধ হয়।

সে নিজেকে একজন ‘নায়ালিস্ট’ হিসেবে দাবি করে। অভিধান মতে, নিহিলিস্ট হচ্ছেন এমন একজন ব্যক্তি যিনি মনে করেন জীবনের কোনো মানে নেই। তিনি একইসঙ্গে সব ধরনের ধর্মীয় ও নৈতিক নীতিমালাকে অস্বীকার করেন। বাজারভ একইসঙ্গে একজন বিজ্ঞানী, গবেষক ও ডাক্তার। পরবর্তীতে তার আরও বেশ কয়েক ধরনের পরিচয় আমরা পাই।
আরকেদির সঙ্গে বাজারভের অসম বয়সী বন্ধুত্ব। কিছুটা গুরু-শিষ্য সুলভ। বাজারভের তুলনায় আরকেদি অনেকটাই নবীন, কাঁচা—জীবনের অন্ধকার অংশগুলোর সঙ্গে তেমন একটা পরিচয় নেই তার।

দীর্ঘদিন পর দুই বন্ধু মিলে আরকেদির পৈত্রিক নিবাসে এসে উপস্থিত হয়। সর্বশেষ বাবা নিকোলাইর সঙ্গে দেখা হওয়ার পর অনেক বছর কেটে গেছে। নিকোলাই শিগগির আবিষ্কার করেন, তিনি তার ছেলেকে আর চিনতে পারছেন না। তার চিন্তাধারা ও কথাবার্তায় এসেছে প্রভূত পরিবর্তন। তিনি নতুন আরকেদিকে ঠিক মেনে নিতে পারছেন না, আবার অবজ্ঞাও করতে পারছেন না। আরকেদির নতুন ‘ওস্তাদ’ বাজারভকেও ঠিক ভালো চোখে দেখতে পারেননি তিনি।

আরকেদিও আবিষ্কার করলেন নতুন এক পিতাকে। বিপত্নীক বাবার সঙ্গে বাসার গৃহপরিচারিকা ফেনিচকার ‘অবৈধ’ সম্পর্কের জের ধরে জন্ম নিয়েছে তার সৎ ভাই। সমাজের চোখে সম্পর্ক অবৈধ হলেও নিকোলাই কোনো দিক দিয়ে ফেনিচকাকে অমর্যাদা করেন না।

পাভেল কিরসানভের বর্ণাঢ্য জীবন। এককালে ছিলেন দুর্ধর্ষ সামরিক অফিসার। রমণীমোহন পাভেল এক সময় প্রেমে পড়েছিলেন। প্রেয়সীকে খুব ভালোবাসতেন। কিন্তু কাছে পাওয়ার আগেই মৃত্যু হয় তার। সেই থেকে তিনি বিবাগী। একা একা দীর্ঘদিন ঘোরার পর অবশেষে ভাইয়ের সঙ্গে থাকতে এসেছেন বছর কয়েক আগে।

বাজারভের নায়ালিজমের ধারণার সঙ্গে ঠিক মানিয়ে নিতে পারেন না পাভেল। পুরনো ঐতিহ্য, জাঁকজমক ও কেতাদুরস্ত জীবনের প্রতি তার গভীর শ্রদ্ধা-ভক্তি। স্বভাবতই, সারাক্ষণ দুজনের মধ্যে লেগে আছে ঝগড়া।
বই অগ্রসর হওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পাঠক পরিচিত হন আরও বেশ কয়েকজন শক্তিশালী চরিত্রের সঙ্গে, যাদের বেশিরভাগই নারী। দ্রুত আগাতে থাকে ঘটনাপ্রবাহ। একের পর এক অপ্রত্যাশিত ঘটনায় এই ৪ মূল চরিত্রের জীবনে আসে আমূল পরিবর্তন।

কখন বইটা পড়ে শেষ করে ফেললাম, টেরই পেলাম না।

একটা বিষয় পরিষ্কার, সেই ১৮৬২ সালের রুশ সমাজের অনেক সমস্যা আজও, ২০২২ সালেও প্রাসঙ্গিক।

শেষ কবে ফিকশন, তাও আবার ক্লাসিক পড়ে এতটা উপভোগ করেছি, মনে করতে পারছি না।

Crimson Cup Banani: A Terrible Experience

 When Crimson Cup opened its first outlet in Banani 11, I was delighted by the variety of flavors offered by this outlet. I believe it was initially a foreign franchise, and they had some really exclusive flavors like Green Tea Macha Latte, etc. They also had decent sandwiches and dessert items, too.

They would also write the customer's name upon the cups (just like in Starbucks), which was a unique touch. However, over the years, renewed competition from North End and new entrants like Second Cup has left Crimson Cup in a dilapidated state. Yesterday, we wanted to visit Yum Cha in Banani, but found out that the Banani outlet has been temporarily shut down. So we decided to visit Crimson cup, which was next to Yum Cha. We ordered a frozen latte and a Mocha, as well as 2 grilled cheese sandwiches and a red velvet cheese cake. Honestly, I have had much better Iced Coffee at Apan Coffe House, and it cost only 60 Taka. Yeah, this may sound incredible, but the Mocha and the Latte tasted exactly the same. There was hardly any caffeine kick; the drink was too sweet and too low in coffee content. Initially, I wanted to order Green Tea Macha Latte, but the guys at the counter literally fumbled with the order--2 of the guys kept discussing among themselves for more than 5 minutes, whether they had a frozen version of that coffee, and will they be able to deliver it. It was 11 PM and I just lost my patience. I told them to change the order to a Latte. The guy told me, 'ভাই লাটে কিন্তু মিষ্টি হবে না (Bro, latte won't be sweet). I was like, 'WTH!'. Do people order coffee for the sugar content? I mentioned, I know, and I prefer that they don't add sugar. But they added sugar in the drink anyway. Now about the grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese they used didn't seem fresh at all, and the food didn't taste much good, either. I maybe boasting a bit, but I can make a better grilled cheese sandwich at home using basic ingredients. The red velvet cheese cake used that same bland, not so fresh looking cheese, and that, too, wasn't anything to write home about.

The total bill came to about 1400 Taka, which is abysmal and too high. I am sure I could have gotten a much better experience at North End if I ordered Cheese Bagels and Coffee with Costarica beans out there, and that'd cost less than this. I don't think I'll be visiting Crimson cup again, anytime soon. For what is worth, the sitting area still looks cozy, but there, too, they had to put up an obnoxious sign that says '5 People or more only' against 2 sofas. As if they had a huge crowd! Most of the Gulshan/Banani restaurants had heavy rush yesterday, thanks to people's chaan raat kind of celebration. But there's was relatively empty, and I realized why--after paying the bill. I felt ripped off and disappointed.

What I am Listening Today

 

So today after a long hiatus, I have decided to resurrect this blog of mine. 

I am now using a paid monthly subscription of Spotify, and I thought I should share some of the music I am listening now. 

I listened to a smooth jazz radio station for the first time in Yahoo music. That was at least 20 years ago. Today, once again I am listening to another of those stations, and it still feels awesome.
